Many people try to change by setting a goal: lose the weight, finish the project, be calmer. Goals matter, but they describe an outcome. Lasting change usually comes from a different question: who do I need to be for this to feel natural?
Outcomes vs. identity
"I want to run a marathon" is an outcome. "I am a runner" is an identity. When an action fits who you believe you are, it takes less willpower to do it. When it clashes with that belief, every step feels like a fight.
Psychologists describe this as self-concept consistency. People tend to act in ways that match how they see themselves, and feel uncomfortable when they do not.
A 4-step way to start
- Describe the person you want to be. Not what they achieve, but how they live. "Someone who handles stress calmly." "A person who keeps promises to themselves."
- Collect evidence you already have. Write down three times you already acted like that person, however small. Your identity is not starting from zero.
- Choose one small action that person would take today. Five minutes counts. The action should be so easy it is hard to skip.
- Count it as a vote. Each action is a vote for the new identity. You do not need a perfect streak, only more votes for the new you than the old one.
Start from where you are right now
Change is easier when it matches your current state. On a low-energy day, "the person I want to be" might just mean resting without guilt. On a strong day, it might mean taking on something harder. A plan that ignores how you feel today is a plan you will drop.
What to avoid
- Vague labels. "I'm a better person" gives you nothing to do. Tie the identity to concrete behaviour.
- All-or-nothing thinking. One missed day does not cancel the identity. It is one data point.
- Borrowed identities. Choose the person you want to be, not the one social media says you should be.
Review it regularly
Every week, ask: what did I do that fits who I am becoming? What got in the way? The answers show you where the identity is taking hold and where it needs a smaller, easier step.
Changed is built around this idea: you start with how you feel, choose who you want to become, and get small daily actions that match both.
